29 year old, male, American veterinarian here, with in-state american veterinary school debt (160K) that has been in practice for 3 years. Living very comfortably as an associate veterinarian making over 6-figures in a suburban region of the South and loving my job. I routinely discourage internships unless you truly have an interest in a specialty field; otherwise, completing an internship is a terrible financial decision, you are paid peanuts as your loans accrue interest. Residency pay (and lifestyle) is also miserable. Soon, even veterinary specialists will be supersaturated, if they aren't already. The veterinary profession ain't that bad, you can make a comfortable living and be happy - you just have to do some great job searching (and soul-searching) and you can't sell yourself short!
