Hey I'm not OP but I am curious as to why you won't buy leather products. I don't mean to offend but I do like to inform people that the Leather industry is fully dependent on the cattle (and other animals) slaughter industry. No animal is raised and harvested for the leather alone. Rather, leather only comes from animals that have been slaughtered for another purpose. Part of the reason why leather prices are so high in recent years is because red meat consumption is actually declining, leaving fewer hides to go around.

I guess what I'm trying to say is don't feel guilty about buying leather because the entire industry is just trying to help make the most use out of the animal.

Unless of course your abstinence of leather is for religious reasons. I get that.

Also depends on what you are using it for. For small everyday items like wallets and shoes I would argue that Shell Cordovan leather from Horween in Chicago is the absolute best. It is actually horse hide.

Pig skin is extremely tough but does not have the most desirable texture opportunities in the finishing process.

Full grain cow hide tends to be the best all around as long as price isn't a concern. It is cheaper than Shell Cordovan but still way more than genuine leather. It should last about 100 years with proper care though.

English Bridle Leather is a specific process of treating cow hide that makes a great leather for bags, briefcases, straps, and horse harnesses.

Same issue I believe. The white top coat is coming off the leather. Is the "mold" a little fuzzy while the white parts are still smooth?

Additionally your couch may be awesome comfortable but your leather quality is not. When looking for your new couch, look for at least top grain leather. Full grain leather is best but will be expensive. Also make sure to check all panels of the couch to make sure it is all the same material. Oftentimes companies will use a cheaper material on less visible parts to cut costs and corners.
