What's the best way of telling a puppy that "you did bad, don't do it again"?

for senior devs that are hoping to pivot in their careers, how do you recommend they pivot domains when they're well into their careers?

In my case, I spent the past decade working for robotics and self driving car companies working mainly in the middleware/embedded space/AI and I want to pivot into cloud because there simply aren't that many jobs in robotics/AI outside of the bay area.

When I look at my skillset, I know C++, Linux, robotics paradigms very well, but that doesn't necessarily translate to cloud. I'm unsure of how to get the domain knowledge necessary to operate in a senior/staff level (as I do now in my current field) without taking a few steps back in the ladder (ie joining as an SDE-II in a company)
