Metalsmith/Jewelry student here

You'll only get close to the actual price if it's solid gold. Most jewelry that is scrapped contains solder, which is a contaminant when melted down, it will cause pitting in the metal when made into ingots or whatever you may be casting. So they only pay you scrap value of your gold because they have to refine it in order to get the gold. Carat weight is also a defining factor, as pure gold is too soft to wear as jewelry. The higher the carat the more gold is in it. Might depend on the actual method of retrieving the gold too. I've seen videos of a chemical process that dissolves everything that is not gold, but the gold powder still has to be cleaned and milled to re-sell. So while gold buying companies are still making a profit, there is still a fair amount of work to get the gold back into a pure enough state to make it workable again. Most gold buying companies work on the ignorance of consumers who don't know the actual value of their broken or unwanted gold jewelry. Gold is going for about $1600 an ounce currently in the buying market, scrap value is determined by the conversion ratio of 28.3495231 grams per ounce, or about 14.175 grams per half ounce. So you divide the current price by 31.1 ( there are 31.1 grams in a troy ounce, which is how gold is weighed). If today’s price per ounce is USD $1,600, then today’s price per gram is USD $51.45 (1600/31.1). Multiply by the fineness of the gold. For each group of gold, divide the karat by 24, then multiply that number by today's gold price per gram. For example, if you have 10K gold and the current price of gold is USD$1,600 per ounce, or USD$51.45 per gram ($1,600/31.1), then the price of your scrap gold is USD$51.45 x .4167 = USD$21.44 per gram. Then you would multiply the price per gram by the weight in grams. If you have 10 grams of 10K gold and you calculated the price at USD$21.44 per gram, then your scrap gold is worth 10 x USD$21.44 = USD$214.40. Hope this is clear enough.

10k = 10/24 = .4167 14k = 14/24 = .5833 18k = 18/24 = .750 22k = 22/24 = .9167

Thank you!

I should be able to recover from it yes, it can go fully into remission, though I was told it can come back in rare circumstances. A lot of the time it is a one-time thing. Most cases are treated the way I'm being treated currently. It is not contagious, but I am easily susceptible to other infections because of my current low immune system. I thankfully have a lot of friends and family support, coincidentally my sister works in the hospital I'm in so she stops by occasionally during her work shift. Thanks for your support! This relieves a bit of boredom and I'm thankful for being able to use my laptop, albeit somewhat gimpily since they have I.V ports in my right hand and my elbow is tender from a third one I asked them to remove.

Mine started almost suddenly about a week ago and were probably some of the nastiest bruises I ever had. Some of them are starting to heal which I take as a good sign and have only had 2 or 3 smaller ones appear more recently. Best of luck to your brother!
