The surveillance programs that have been uncovered are in conflict with the constitution and everyone involved knew that from the start. It is just that they don't give a shit. The big question is that if the government is unable to follow the constitution and prosecute its own then how can the people trust them. And if the NSA have found a way to subvert the justice system how are we sure that no other organization with huge amounts of personal data will find the same loophole.

How are you balancing requests from official investigators with the confidentiality of your source? I assume you have gotten tons of requests for insight from officials investigating people and organizations mentioned in the documents. They likely want evidence other then your articles but giving them full access or even revealing the source to them might harm the journalistic work exposing these people and may even reveal the source. Especially since many of these documents could be presented as official evidence in court.

Max sentencing is 21 years but as you say there is preventive detention where an inmate will not be released if he is a danger to society. As far as I know it have not been used to that extent yet as even the most crazy people who have murdered people just to drink their blood change a lot in 20 years and often turn around given a second chance.
