Thanks for answering! The techniques I learned were to ask people to describe a process step-by-step or to describe a typical day hour-by-hour, or to ask them to describe their field without guiding them towards a specific topic. In this way, you can find out what is important to them without inserting your own preconceptions of their work/culture/life. Do you worry about that during an interview?

Did you (or any of the people you interviewed) study anthropology at all? I took an ethnographic interviewing course in college for my anthropology degree and sometimes I recognize those techniques when I listen to radio interviews.
