Mud logging is making a log of the well drilling as part of its permanent record. It involves reading the comparative gas levels coming up out of the mud (oil based fluid) that is circulated in the well as it is drilled, correlating that with the drill bit's rate of penetration (ROP), and samples of rock chips circulated up from the bit by the mud. There are other things that go on the well log too like gamma radiation readings and reaistivity as well as the mud weight and viscosity at different times during the well drilling.

A good place to research well drilling terminology is the schlumberger oilfield glossary here: http://www.glossary.oilfield.slb.com/

If you're that lightweight you should probably look at something more in the line of mud logging which requires basic geologic knowledge but is significantly less physically demanding. I used to mud log and it wasn't as much heavy lifting as roughnecking. Then again when I had to lift the gas trap into the possum belly all by myself and that was a strain, that things like 50lbs and there's no good place to hold it.

Lucky, I mudlogged for about a year in the Appalachian basin andthe only women I ever saw on site came on just to clean the toilets.

What's the worst thing that happened to delay a well you were on?

I was once on a rig where they had drilled a good 4000ft down they then tripped out to change the bit to one they could go horizontal with and while they were out somebody dropped junk into the hole all the way to the bottom. They had to trip in and grind it up then trip in again to fish the junk out then they finally were able to trip in to continue the drillng.

When they have plenty of people already you need a geosciences B.S. but if a company is needing for people they will hire people with just high school diplomas.
