Nascar had it's roots in southern prohibition-era moonshine bootlegging operations. People would modify their "street stock" cars in order to evade law enforcement and tax men when making deliveries.

Once I started racing simulators on PC this last year, I thought hur durr durr only making left turns how hard can that be? But a lot of skill is required to keep the car under control and drive fast even with her overwhelming amount of setup between the car and track that is designed specifically to facilitate driving fast and making left turn - especially in some of the short tracks. Dirt tracks are an insane amount of difficulty as the conditions rapidly deteriorate and you have to be flexible enough to adapt your route around the turns.

I enjoy the open-wheel style racing a lot more than oval but the sheer focus it takes to maintain position if you are in the middle of a turn with cars surrounding you gives a visceral physical stress reaction when the stakes are in no way life-threatening but you want to win and not screw up the race for someone else.

Why is it that weather reporters feel it necessary to go into dangerous costal areas and stand around in 90+ MPH winds to report on how bad conditions are despite local evacuations? Is it just hubris? Boredom? As a Floridian, I have theories and frankly, none of them are flattering.
