The difference is often one of prestige. Some people think "comic book" sounds too childish, so they refer to more "serious" works as "graphic novels." Maus, Art Spiegelman's book about his father in the Holocaust, is a "graphic novel," Batman is a "comic book".

Or it's a difference of format. Watchmen was originally released as 12 monthly issues, and then collected into a single book. But if someone writes a complete 300-page comic story and publishes it first as a single book, that's referred to as a "graphic novel." (That's the meaning of the term Mr Uslan is using.)

Because DC is entering the superhero movie universe game after Marvel, there's a chance to observe and learn from them.
