Why face-grain instead of end grain for WATL?

I throw at an IKTOF-related range, and we started with WATL targets, but have a lot of success with IKTOF.

Before I saw Mr. Wizard, or Bill Nye, I was getting physics lessons from Dr. Julius Sumner Miller on The Hilarious House of Frightenstein.

Does that mean you toss a lot of knotty boards? Or at least is that the intent?

I get what you mean about being harder to standardize end grain. Sometimes there will be a patch in one 8x8 that is rock-hard.

And FYI the axes in IKTOF are tomahawks - 12"+ length, and max 4" face. So pretty close WATL as far as I can tell from the website.

Can you recommend a WATL place near eastern Michigan, or south-western Ontario?
