It is also important to note that parasites interfere with their hosts behavior by releasing a soup of hormones and other chemicals. So Even if it is caused by the parasite serotonin may be included in the parasites arsenal and is still part of the problem. *almost_drhouse if you could verify any of this that would be awesome.

It also has to do with how they evolved. Staying alive in a host is a complicated and arduous process. Some journeys and things parasites do are remnants of how they evolved where they came from. Also evolving NOT to do something or do something differently is an unlikely event as well with the challenges they are presented, much easier to just continue what they do. For example a cow fluke travels from a snail (maybe ant I forget) to a cows gut, burrows into the blood stream to reach its final stage, then goes back into the gut to drink blood from the lining for the rest of its life. The blood stage is rumored to have been a remnant of when the fluke invaded the cow's ancestors through their skin and has remained despite their ability to infiltrate the cow through its food.
