My SO and I are leaving in late July to travel Western/Central Europe. We'll be flying into Copenhagen and working our way south along the Northern coast as a general/vague itinerary, but are really just aiming to go with the flow of things. Our goal is to travel for as long as possible, but we'll both be first timers and I haven't had many first hand accounts from people other than those who go only for a few weeks at time.

Do you have any great towns/places off the beaten path that hold well in your memories? We're trying to avoid big tourist hubs and just experience travelling for as long as possible. We should fly over with somewhere around $15k saved up. Is this enough for us to have a good time for 3-4 months in Europe and still have enough to fly over to SE Asia for a few months?

We'll hopefully be doing some work exchange and TESL or something, but it's all kind of up in the air still. I really don't want to limit our travel with commitments, but how far in advance do i need to be in touch with some of these places to have a chance at landing a job?

Thanks in advance if you can answer any of that. We're really excited and are just trying to gather as much info as possible.

Thanks, scoping out an area before committing is a good idea I didn't really think of. I've got this thread bookmarked so I may actually shoot you a PM or two in the future if it's not too much of a hassle.

I was told that I wouldn't be able to do much camping/'sleeping on the side of the road' in Western Europe as much of the land is privately owned. Is this not the case? Would you recommend a small tent or do you think we'd be able to get by with hammocks and rain flys?

We are white, and are planning on using AirBnB a lot and staying in hostels otherwise, but I'd like to spend some time on the ground outside when the weather is nice.

$800 in 4 months makes me feel a lot better about our situation. I figure we'd probably splurge a little here and there, and because of our lack of planning we might end up spending a little more on last-minute travel tickets. In that regard what is your opinion on the Eurail pass? Would we be better off just buying tickets as we needed? Again aiming to be more frugal than not.

Hey thanks! We're flying into Copenhagen because we find $400 flights over, which is super cheap, and since it's an Icelandic airline we were thinking about staying over for a few days since we're already there.

We actually have some connections in Denmark, so while we'll be flying into Copenhagen we may not be paying our way the whole time hopefully. After which our plan is to move south into Germany/Netherlands/etc and further on as the season gets colder.

We'll definitely indulge in some experiences though, I expect a 4-6 month trip depending on how often I can meet up with friends and friends of friends who are living over there in one country or another.
