What would it take for the GOP to break away from the far right? They have to see how the extremists are costing them elections and killing them nationally at this point. Dont the benefits of some gerrymandered House seats fade when compared to decreasing odds of winning the WH?

Great insight on the immediate with Boehner, but I'm talking long term. How many election cycles can they withstand where the Akins and O'Donnells and Angles cost them easy Senate seats and the primaries damage their candidates for the WH before the party has had enough? It is hard for me to understand why a party would keep pursuing such a clearly self-defeating strategy.

If we assume this drags on and the GOP gets the vast majority of the blame (as seems to already be the case), how much does this affect the chances of their losing the House?
