To add on: I started martial arts at the age of 7. It was my choice, I asked my parents for it. I think what really matters is if your kid wishes to pursue martial arts. However, as a kid it is very easy to just give up and move on, my parents made it very clear that this was a commitment that I was making and would have to honor that for years to come.

Now, I have a second degree black belt in Tang Soo Do and a first degree in Tae Kwon Do. I wouldn't change a thing if I could go into the past. Like Joe says, it is about the discipline and philosophy. Yes, I learned various moves and skills however what I really learned was determination, hard work, and practice are all the things you need in life to make it. I have grown mentally, physically, and spiritually due to martial arts, and it is something I will have for the rest of my life.

I think if you can give your kid that, that would be amazing. I did get lucky on my school who had amazing teachers (sadly they were bought out after recieving my first degree in Tang Soo Do). However, it is really important that your son wants to do it, and enjoys doing it. Otherwise, he will not learn and you'll just be wasting money.
