Ooh I get to scratch "You think you're in an action movie/play too many video games/that's a unrealistic power fantasy" off my bingo card!
Because that totally invalidates the concept of wanting a gun owned for self defense to be quickly accessible.
Its like locking up a fire extinguisher.

I've never heard of someone's house burning down because they couldn't get to their fire extinguisher in time.
Theirs a real simple solution for your kids not accidentally shooting themselves while playing with your gun. Its called parenting.

Having a gun under your pillow isn't an essential liberty.
Imagine if the government mandated you front door needed to be locked, and periodically checked it, and if it wasn't locked, they took away your house and threw you in jail.
"Leaving your front door unlocked isn't an essential liberty"
I don't care what the Founding Fathers think, everybody deserves to be safe and free.
Safety is an illusion. The sooner the one realizes and respects that fact the sooner one lives in a sane and just society. No one is responsible, nor capable of providing for your safety other than yourself. The freedom to do so is your safety.

Have you tried putting stuff on a high shelf? If you can't outsmart a 3 year old I can't help you.
I'm not living in fear, I'm living in reality here.
I'm reasonable, lock your shit up fine, but leave it loaded, or leave it unlocked and leave the ammo locked. You do you.
But government mandated laws on how you do that, enforced by the threat of property confiscation and jail time is authoritarian.

I don't know why neo-libs think justified self defense is some fancy loophole for murder.
Everyone knows the only real loophole for murder is being a cop in a minority dense neighborhood.
