it was widely recognized that slavery was wrong at the time. Please don't imply that anyone who points this out is stupid.

Jefferson knew it was wrong, and he had many friends who loudly declaimed that it was wrong. Just look at his friend Edward Coles, for pete's sake.

It's not "modern ethics." It's right and wrong.

Read the declarations of the reasons for secession past by four of the seceding states. They make it explicit that the primary reason for secession was purely to preserve (and expand) slavery, which they believed would not otherwise survive long given political trends in the US. Sure, the US government was not primarily focussed on slavery, but THE reason for the war was slavery, full stop.

Well, many, many listeners would sign on to that! But I would wonder -- the popularity must mean that you go through it many, many more times than almost any audience member. I'd wonder if there'd be a danger of getting sick of it?
