I was in research science, on the path to becoming PhD and then post-docs and then professor. That seemed like a great trajectory for my life but then I discovered how impactful coding could be and I wanted to switch to pure code and not science. Mostly since a lot of the science work I did was a lot more abstract than the coding I do.

To get into the field you need to learn to transfer your skills but then also send out a lot of applications to land the first DS/ML job. Not everyone will think you can do DS/ML from STEM so it takes the right place, but they are out there and with enough determination you will find it!

There are a few. For ML its making sure your workflow is fast... even in Python. Can the process keep up with the data coming in?

Udemy, kahn academy... also get an arduino and play around. Make sure you like it!

Not too sure on this one. When one of us used pyspark it wasn't very good at the real-time data aspect. While Deephaven was built with that as in mind. Need to look up pyspark for more information in this. Thanks for the new tool to me!

YES! all learning is important and since its a team experience that would be a great major. Just make sure you also have a solid programming background
