Is it ethical to unlock hardware you own? When you buy an item (Car, TV, Test Equipment, Etc.) You own it and everything it came with or in it. So if you modify the software/hardware to be able to use hardware that you own should it be ok.

This secret schematic BS started in the early to mid 90'. I have spoken with a few manufactures recently and some manufactures use the same PCB for 4-5 models and rebadged products. Can the value of a resistor on a board be considered a secret, Back in the day according to the manufactures YES! Sometimes it is/was only a few components that are missing or changed between their models/badges (this is what they say is a secret the layout and values of said parts) They don't want people adding/removing a zero ohm resistor and a cap etc. to make it the next model up or unlocking disabled features etc. Most stuff now days the locks are in the firmware but they still think schematics are secret. I agree a A DMM / And Datasheets = No Secret. The multi-layer level a Radiography Machine solves that just gets prohibitively expensive to see what's deep inside the device you own.
