Can you elaborate on the whole world concept and the 2000 symbols limit?

Many people have vocabularies well beyond 2000 words, and use non-word symbols like a thumbs up. Is there like transient forgetfulness, and we only use the 2000 symbols most recently encountered (and factoring in commonness to them)?

Or, does it take on a different solution of these people simply understanding that words are comprised of 26 symbols, or the 40 sounds you mentioned? But if that's true, how does a language like Chinese function where there are many different symbols used for just one purpose?
