one country two systems is a compromise. it is the best way for hong kong to exist as it always has been. what many forget is that hong kong has never been under full control by the communists - the history of the city, which was ceded from the Qing dynasty, is double that of the communist government, and the human and civil rights of her people have always been protected (more or less) under British rule. i'm not here to talk about whether or not that time period was good, but it is important to understand that the very basic structure of Hong Kong was distinct from that of the communists at the outset.

It is with this distinction in mind that Hong Kong gets preferential treatment in terms of trade; for example it is considered a special trade partner by the United States, for the very fact that it is not china. china benefits from this as well and it is not in their interest to disrupt the very principles that made HK the trade hub it is today.

The extradition bill (and the legal amendments bill) was meant to subtly turn HK to china; once the bill is enacted it is their plan to replace local HKers in positions of economic and political power with mainland toadies. if they managed to do this without a fuss then they would be able to extract all of the benefit of hong kong without losing these special trade agreements. the ones to lose out from this are the hong kong people and their civil and human rights

Awesome! I'd always been fascinated by ATC myself and would love to get into it myself. What made you interested in the job? Did you join it right out of school or get in from doing other stuff? Before applying for the job, what sorts of preparation did you do to make yourself more suitable to the task? What kind of skills do you think are most important during the course of your day to day?

the american flag is indeed used as a sign of freedom, but it is a bit more complex than that. also signified is a plea for support of the US government and people, and also because the hong kong people are more willing to wave almost any other flag than that of the communist regime.

not many people are out there doing this. some people, myself included, have in the past derided this as being crass as well as giving detractors more ammunition to say that there is foreign influence at work. However, this has succeeded in bringing our plight to attention, and any method that shows the people of the world that our fight is their fight is something that helps us, I think

wow is this true? im not surprised CdC is a toadie, you dont get to suddenly be as successful and widespread as them without that while within china's sphere of influence, but i'm more interested in evidence that Fairwood does not hold similar views.

what about Maxim? those guys have always seemed pretty grounded in Hong Kong, do you know about them?
