As a non-native English speaker. Spell-check and Google (especially dictionary extension) can do wonders for English proficiency.

That and reading a lot of forums and always looking up words that you don't know (for me it's just a double click away).

Highlighting a word or a phrase is something I do often when I'm in need of a thorough explanation of something. But otherwise I use Google Dictionary which is even quicker.
