Eh, I disagree with your first sentence. Those square vases are no more expensive than a clear glass one.
I guess if people look at flowers and immediatly start calculating in their head the cost of the flowers in there, they've missed the point. I love receiving flowers and get them gifted to me quite often. Less important than the cost per stem in the mix, is the creativity of the arragement. For me, at least...

The irony, when you list roses and lillies, are that depending on the type of rose or lily, they can actually be relatively cheap per stem. I wish OP mentioned that. That said, he mentioned that he likes alstros below -- I think those are worse than carnations!! You see them in any gas station arrangement.
