How do they know when it's about to fail? Would a regular ultrasound suffice? Or do you wake up one day and realize "oh shit, my bit of cow has been put to pasture"?

Sounds a lot more straightforward than I imagined, good for you! My grandad had some kind of artificial valve. It ticked a bit like a clock. I wonder what your cow valve will sound like ;-)
