My understanding is that any WW2 and prior veteran is eligible for burial at Arlington. In the post WW2 era, only those that are killed in combat or have received combat related medals (i.e. Silver or Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Navy Cross or Medal of Honor etc.) are eligible for plot burials. Cremated Remains of any veteran are eligible for space in the Columbarium which is located in the Southeastern corner of the cemetery and off the typical tourist paths.

Source: These are the rules explained to me by the Arlington Administration office when I buried my wife in Arlington in 2009.

FYI. I would contact Arlington soon concerning your grandfater's remains as space in the Columbarium is decreasing at the rate of 30 to 32 burials a day. This is due to the large number of Korean and Vietnam War vets that are presently passing away as part of the Boomer generation. There are 7 courtyards presently filled and additional spaces are available until the cemetery retaining wall on the Southeast end is filled. Until new space for additional space for courtyards are budgeted and constructed, there may be a period of time when remains will not be accepted until new construction is complete.

ANC will require a copy of your grandfather's discharge papers (DD-214) and if the remains have been in your family's possession, a signed note from the Cremation Director that the urn has not been opened since it was initially sealed. Partial cremains are not accepted or considered eligible for interment at Arlington.

If found eligible, the space provided in the Columbarium is suitable for placement of two urns making your grandmother eligible for interment in the same space as your grandfather. No matter what her veteran or non-veteran status may be during the course of her life.

Good luck to you and best wishes in your endeavors. Your Grandfather would be proud of you I am sure.

I thought his logic was very apparent based on his response to the opportunity to save himself presented by his brother Jamie. Rather than relent to Jamie's parlay to sacrifice himself for Tyrion's life, he decides to go all "Fuck your Mitsubishi, I got a horse outside" and double down with his only other option he has left. Trial by combat effectively screwing up his father's plan for succession by denying Jamie the opportunity to keep his promise to father children. The likely outcome of his death by combat simultaneously ending the Lannister name with his death. It was a brilliant move on his part.
