There's a lot of travelers that go to dangerous places in the world. This is much more true for journalists. Look at the photos of Darfur on Shane's website: http://www.shanebauer.net/photography/ they are pretty amazing, but also don't look like the safest place to be. That's what journalists do sometimes. They go to dangerous places and report on things.

If you read some of Shane's work, or even his replies in this AMA you can see that his politics are not nationalistic or likely to be those of someone working for a government.

Live in a dense city with good public transit and shops near homes. Places like NYC are great for the environment. Suburbs are terrible.
