I can help with this. Secondary is really only necessary if you are going to add something post fermentation to a beer. Say if you wanted to add berries, my advice would be move the beer from primary, to secondary and then add the fruit. What this does is remove your beer from the yeast which settles at the bottom, the yeast cake. This will help reduce any secondary fermentation from the added sugars from the fruit. If the yeast ate some of the sugars you would not get the full body or flavor. Source, I am a brewer/homebrewer.

Some people blanch it a little, others just throw them in. The alcohol in the beer should do it. I have never had problems with either method.

They have the best toys! Also, be wary of craft beers these days due to budwiser purchasing these companies rather than trying to burst into the scene with new ideas.
