Can you explain dark matter in layman's terms?

I am studying Biology myself and I have this little problem right now in that I'm interested in too many fields right now. Having this first year get most of the subjects not related to biology but somewhat required for it (chemistry, math, informatics, statistics) does not help to find what's easy or hard for me either.

So, I'm wondering between going for ethology and investigate on animal intelligence and communication (nothing specific like you do for now though) or going more for genetics and ending up working on gene therapy and/or senescence.

So, anything I should know about both 'paths'? How's a job in these two like? Any special warning for any of them? Whatever you think a student should know to help me decide, specially what they don't exactly tell you on class.
