How does the self-rescue kit work? Do you not have to climb down anyway?

Amazon's autoscaling is not that great, I'd recommend instead to use amazon's load balancer even if you have only 1 instance and spin up another if traffic is getting too much. Combine it amazon's cloudfront service and you will never have an outage again.
