Somatic-cell gene therapy is fairly common, and is routinely applied to tissue to replace/add in genes to cells.

Germline therapy is the permanent version, where genes in the zygote can be altered, but is currently prohibited.

It's useful to combat diseases such as Cystic Fibrosis and SCID.
