I've been thinking about the term hero, and I agree - it applies here.

I think it should apply to anyone who puts themselves in danger (either socially, physically or economically) for something that doesn't primarily reward themselves, but instead rewards their society/culture, or humanity as a whole.

This man could have easily had his life ruined by trying (and succeeding) to protect someone he didn't even know. This man is a hero.
