Did you communicate with any extreme Islamists? How do they justify their actions?

The Syrian refugee situation is honestly a serious crisis that isn't given enough attention by today's politicians. Which resolution to this war do you think will benefit the innocent refugees the most? (ie the government or the rebels)

Hey /u/Gabriela I am obviously not in Syria right now, but I can explain the basics behind the Sunni and Shiite dispute. The key point that split these two groups was the death of the Prophet Muhammed, in 632. The Sunnis emphasize the teachings of Muhammed, and believe that their leaders should be caliphs (whoever the hell gets voted in). The Shiites believe that only Muhammed's successors can be the leaders of Islamic states. Now, I am not Muslim, but the reason that these two sects want to combat each other is that, in their eyes, the other sect is committing heresy. I mean, sure, they worship the same God, and they may share bloodlines, but at the end of the day, they differ in core beliefs. This does not mean that they have to keep warring. The United States and the Russian Federation disagree about multiple issue, but still are able to work together. This is the way that the Sunni's and Shiites should be able to work together. However, this issue goes a bit deeper than the sectarian split. Whether or not they were on the same side, a revolution was inevitable. The government was committing atrocities, and the rebels rashly fought back militarily. I don't know how this situation is going to play out, but there will be no panacea to the Syrian crisis.

TL;DR Shiites and Sunnis disagree about the ways they select their leaders. It is possible for them to work together, but difficult with differing core beliefs. Also, this situation is deeper than simply a religious split.
