It's not a dumb question. It's actually the most important question in the whole field of public land management, in my opinion. Is it worth it to sell off the land? What is value of undisturbed nature? It is truly fascinating!! I am a huge proponent of keeping the land for public use in a majority of the cases because it seems much more likely to me that I can benefit from visiting nature/parks monuments- whereas it is too abstract to see how I can "benefit" from the one time bump in revenue the government gets from selling to the highest bidder. Is the price of natural gas going to slightly go down if we frack all of the protected federal lands? Will the government efficiently use the money it gets to benefit me in a real, tangible way? The question "where does the money go?" Is so vitally important to the debate surrounding this topic!
