Part of discursive practice theory in anthropology is that the anthropologists tries for observation in lieu of personal testimony or psychology-type survey, the rationale being that just like many native speakers can't explain grammar, few "native" members of cultural can articulate rationale. Have you ever thought about an anthropological approach to your study? It'd be a tough subculture to penetrate, but I think of all people, delinquent children would be some of the least rational actors. As a side note, I'm sure there is a ton of good research out there in child delinquency and thrill seeking that might help give some perspective.

What a wonderful baton pass! That's amazing. Voyager seemed to still understand that AND have mature writing. I hope the future of Star Trek remembers Roddenberry's vision.

Yes! Innocence was captured beautifully in that movie, and it deserves to be mentioned with all other iconic teen movies for their day! It's too bad things move so quickly now. I think, in a different era, that movie could have been as memorable enduring as Pretty in Pink or Animal House.

It seems like a response philosophy, and I find it humorous they choose to define themselves by definitions given by institutions they oppose. But Satan would be the ultimate hero, defying God, the tyrant, right?

Unfortunately, I don't. I'm still new to the field, myself, but I do think it is a valuable lens and hope it can be helpful to you. I think this thread has been a fascinating read. Not only do I appreciate your thoughtful yet measured responses, I am happy to see you talking about it in such a public way. I think your research could be very crucial to understanding the pulse or soul of the country right now.

I do have a more specific question about the trend. Has this seemed to entice kids who might not be delinquent otherwise? Have child delinquency rates gone up because of the fad?
