That is actually how it used to be years ago. Everyone got $5 + 100% of the tips. But, you were required to maintain a 90% acceptance rating, or else they would deactivate you.

Then there was a class action lawsuit, the ruling from which established that these companies cannot deactivate contractors for not accepting offers (or else we would be employees). It cost them a lot of money, and led to changes, including the new pay policy.

To be fair, your app very clearly says on your offer before you accept the the guarantee includes tips. It's also in your contract how it works, and in the pay policy page on the Dasher website.

That dasher is scamming your friend, and should absolutely be reported.

No pay changes have happened yet. All we have to go on is Tony's tweet "in the coming days..."

It's important to note, that when a customer leaves a large tip that exceeds the guarantee - DoorDash hides that from us until after the delivery.

So, let's say in the example above that it was an $8 guarantee, but the customer actually tipped $20. Once the dasher swipes 'delivery complete' a special congrats screen appears and shows that the dasher actually made $21 ($20 tip + $1 from DoorDash). There is no way to know this ahead of time. It's truly slot machine mentality.

One of the reasons they do this (aside from preventing cherry picking of the highest paying orders), is that if the order is cancelled after we arrive to the restaurant, they pay us 50% of the guarantee. Which would be $4 in this example, instead of $10.50.

Theoretically, I agree with you. However, most Postmates orders in my area only pay $3-$4 for what ends up being 20-30 minutes of work. And that's a huge gamble to take on.

GrubHub has you tip in advance, but they hire higher quality drivers and generally provide better service, and don't engage in shady marketing tactics (adding restaurants without permission, making drivers place orders, etc).

Personally, I'd be happy if everyone only tipped afterwards. I also think that it would result in better service. You best believe I'm going out of my way on each and every Postmates order. GH also, because they pay very well. DD? Well, I come from a customer service background, so I try my best...but I've seen the other drivers out there, and just 'yikes' sometimes.

It doesn't cost them more money. They make the same amount. It's the driver makes less money, as we have to sit in the restaurant and wait for the food to be cooked from scratch, for little to no extra pay. And since we aren't employed by these services, they couldn't care less about having us do that.
