My father's uncle always told me he respected the German soldiers he fought against on the Western front. That they were regular people and good fighters. Coincidentally, he told me that the "Japs" were "small and easy to shoot".

What was school like for you?

Yeah! If you were a seasoned Western Front fighter, especially so - they wanted the good, experienced guys to be the ones reinforcing those already in the Pacific. I know there's a lot of stuff online (including on here) about how they worked out who went to Pacific and who stayed in Europe. Can't remember anything solid off the top of my head.
