Everything we know about the world happened because one scientific theory beat out its competition. If we didn't have competition in science, some or all of these theories would be treated as truth today:
Science only works because we question our current theories, test, and compare with new information. If we find a theory that's bad, we either modify the theory based off the new information, or we scrap it for a different one. The scientific theory is never about being right, it's about being less wrong.
