Alabama is among the most conservative and impoverished places in America. Demographically and politically, I wouldn't say it's representative of the country as a whole. Alabama still carries cultural scars from the civil war and civil rights eras, moreso than most states.

That said, the Alabama region has many wonderful qualities. Plenty of beautiful natural landscapes. Great musical and athletic traditions. Lots of fine people, great food, etc.

Like most places in America, the whole is made up of good and bad to equal something unique.
