My dad's best friend did the New York to Paris flight for Delta in the '80s. Since he only flew two times a month you'd think he could have at least managed to be sober during that time, but, no, he regularly flew drunk. Honestly, he probably was a better pilot when drunk.
My dad loved flying more than anything. He even gave up drinking when he was offered a job with Delta. He retired early from the Navy to take that job, but, he failed the eye exam and was grounded. After he was grounded he basically gave up on life and ended-up feeding a bullet to his brain a few years later.

I'm late to the party but hoping you could give me your perspective on alcoholism among pilots. My father was a pilot and I grew-up surrounded by pilots and every single one of them was a raging alcoholic.
