I can tell you that my grandfather was in Germany during WWII and he told me the same thing. They had ideas that things were not right but no one dared ask. He said they thought they were workers and had no ideas about what actually happened.

I was born in Germany myself, I moved to the states when I was 5 so I don't rememeber much.

I lived in Eastern Iowa for a bit, where in NE Iowa are you from originally?

I'm also a history lover, I really really really hate that the germans are blamed for starting the war. I will always say the Serbs started the war.

There is a hospitality company in Alabama that is ran by some great Jewish folks that have done a lot for the community in alabama. You may want to give them a look when you're traveling in the south east. (LBA hospitality is the name btw)
