I am also an RN(M) on a psychiatric unit and will be completely honest, it depends on the diagnosis. We get chronically suicidal patients(not a majority) from time to time and they are not treated equally. Their behavior at times can be attention seeking and a neutral approach can be more effective. These range is diagnosis but Borderline Personality Disorder is a common one. That being said, safety is always the highest priority with respect being a close 2nd.

It was difficult when I first started working in psych but as I became more familiar with the diagnosis it was easier. I had a bias after recognizing my mother had very similar traits. We have a much healthier relationship as a result. We have a large percentage of patients that come on that are BPD. Not a lot of them are chronically suicidal. I'll let OP weigh in and stop hijacking the AMA. Feel free to PM me
