I'm from Chicago and own guns, nothing is hard to get at all. It's been legal to carry in Illinois for a while now and for all intents and purposes it's pretty easy to get a ccw permit. The state of Illinois does not have an assault weapon ban, any Chicago/Cook co resident with a FOID can drive 10 minutes to the burbs and buy an ar15 with 30+ rd mags at a gun shop no questions asked.

Most of the weapons on the streets in Chicago used in crime or pleasure originate from suburban gun dealers. Second to that, people get their shit across the border in Indiana, where there is a big gun show in crown point every month with private sellers and no background check is required.

Private firearm sales do not require any background check, sites like armslist which is the craigslist of guns have all kinds of fishy shit up for sale. Straw purchases happen all the time and are pretty undetectable if the criminals are not stupid. We don't need to get shit from down south, we love our guns in the midwest.
