  • Why are modern MMORPGs so fixated on binding certain areas to levels. 80% of the world in new MMOs is irrelevant when you become max level, the same goes for items and content in general. Older MMORPGs like Ragnarok gave you much more freedom in chosing where and how to level up.

  • Same goes for character customization. Assigning your own skills and stats has become a very rare occurance these days. Modern MMORPGs feel much more restrictive in these aspects.

  • To a certain degree this also holds true to story. I feel like I can play through an MMORPG these days. That gives me the feeling that I finished it and most "max level content" is just added on top of it.

  • There also is a huge fixation on reaching max level to join in on endgame content, seperating leveling phase and endgame even more. Games just feel like they have levels and much less like free and open worlds.

How do you see this /stand on these points as a MMORPG designer?
