I attended an event at Boston Medical Center last year (or maybe early this year)
One of the biggest points they had was that the opioid epidemic is where it’s at because of prescribing too many people to different pain killers when there could have been other options. Another big point they drove in was that the medical industry should accept responsibility for handing these out like candy, essentially, whether or not drs were lied to a out their effects or not. They also showed some data (don’t have exact numbers) showing how many patients became addicted through prescriptions through their drs.
Two of my best friends are junkies, have never been prescribed any pain meds ever. I have 5 family members who have been on pain killers most of my life, and they’re addicts. They get withdrawals if they forget to take meds, and it’s really really fucked up. They never wanted the meds, but bills don’t pay themselves. A different family member got an addiction after she was prescribed a months dosage for an injury. She went on to do h heavily because Percs were too expensive to buy daily.
So if we act like a lot people aren’t addicts because of prescriptions, how can we ever get to the bottom of it? There are a lot of reasons that opiate addiction is so rampant, a big part of it is that opiates are fun to take, but we can’t ignore that a shit ton of people got addicted because their dr said ‘take these pain killers for a month and you’ll be fine”
Now that I’m writing this, around me, most people who became addicts got hooked on percocets. You remember a few years back how every rapper on every song was talking about taking percs? Well guess what became the popular drug? Same happened when making music about lean became popular. I’m not blaming the artists for it, but when you’re told your whole life that drugs are bad, and then you smoke weed and realize that it’s nothing, you start to question whether other drugs are actually bad and that’s what I noticed in my area. Everyone said ‘well weed didn’t kill me like people said it would’
There’s no one reason why opioid epidemic is where it’s at, but they got on the streets through prescriptions first and foremost. I know one person who sells her bottle of painkillers every month like clockwork for extra money. She only keep one or two to take before she gets a drug test to ‘prove’ she’s taking them.
That ended up being a bit of a rant, this topic has so many areas to talk about that it’s really hard to do over a comment.
