When did you realize you were growing up in a different type of family?

I'm an American who cares deeply about Ukraine and thinks what Russia is doing there is disgusting especially with their support of the rebels and the subsequent Malaysian Airlines incident. Also I have been to 32 countries in the past 2.5 years and this view of Americans not traveling and caring about the rest of the world is getting increasingly antiquated and inaccurate.
