Let's say we implemented more retraining, counseling, and other such programs in prisons, in order to give convicts a better chance at re-integrating (rather than re-offending) and contributing to society on release.

Let's say that people then started committing crimes to get access to this system.

Option One: Stop allowing prisons to positively transform people and make them productive members of society upon release.

Option Two: Realize this is an incredibly sad indictment of our society and the opportunities people are getting. Provide better opportunities for non-criminals to succeed as well. Give whoever designed the prison rehabilitation/retraining/counseling system a fucking raise and congratulate them for granting a huge boon to society while reducing the repeat rate of criminal acts.

I vote for Option Two.

But the dementia and decrepitude of one's LATE THIRTIES would surely preclude safe employment in any kind of physical occupation.
