Heya Ragnar,

Here's a few questions for you!

  1. There's a mood to all of your games, a certain melancholy and a sense of wonder. Where do you get your inspiration?

  2. The women in your games! They're so confident and sassy! If you could reincarnate and choose your gender, which would you pick and why? Go on! Be honest!

  3. Why do you make games?

Best of luck with the Kickstarter. I'm trying to convince my wife to let me spend big bucks on the Complete pack, but it's not really working out too well. Advice and convincing arguments appreciated.

Many others have done it before me, but I just have to express how much of an influence your games have had on me. I finished Riven all on my own as a young teen, without walkthroughs and none of your fancy Internets. I cursed and sighed and swapped discs and marvelled, and in the end I made it, and it was the most glorious feeling ever. It didn't end there, though. The world of Riven (and the ages of Myst in general) drew me in like I'd never experienced before and like I've never experienced since. It got me to read books on quantum mechanics and to learn a fictional language, for crying out loud!

I've been following you guys at Cyan (and your colleagues at the sadly no longer existing Presto Studios) up until the many stumbles of URU Live, and I've always felt a dull sadness that Cyan had slowly disappeared off the gaming map to build remakes and ports. It makes me endlessly happy that you guys are determined to take back the limelight!

So yes, basically: thank you so much, Rand, and all of the other people involved in making the Myst games. I'm not sure you realize quite the influence you've had on people like myself.

ENOUGH GUSHING. I have questions!

  • The music has always been a big part of the Myst experience. Any ideas which direction you'll be taking it this time? Will we see something along the lines of Robyn's more ambient soundtracks? Or will you go all-out orchestral like Jack Wall did? I'm fine with either, by the way :)
  • I'm guessing present-day Cyan isn't quite Riven-days (or even URU-days) Cyan anymore. Who will be on staff for Obduction, and what will their roles be? Are you thinking on tracking down more people who used to work on the Myst games? Do you have new people in mind that you're excited about introducing to us?

Very best of luck with the Kickstarter. I'll keep spreading the word!
