Quality of software is one thing, but I also realize that the owner of the AV company(or any software that auto updates and has system privileges) basically could be, or could become a backdoor or monitoring tool.

So.. what AV companies do you trust for A: quality B: trust the ownership?

For example, Kaspersky is owned by an ex-KGB guy, right? And ESET is Eastern European good guys? Do you think these things really matter or am I being paranoid?

If possible, can you give us a list of your most trustworthy mass market AV/firewall providers that have windows products?
