LOTR isn't like Star Wars in that there isn't a official lore council or whatever. Tolkien's estate sold the rights to the film world to WB, which is what's being used here. The other books and so on remain the property of Christopher Tolkien iirc, who is a conservative regarding them and only consider the official works, well, official.
