I have a question about gamma ray bursts. I read that betelgeuse is bound to go super nova within the next hundred thousand years or so. What would the chances of its GRB reaching and disrupting life on earth? If it's not a concern, why not?
Thanks!

That's it? Wow, I would have assumed it would have been a much larger range. I mean 50 LYs is so large the human mind cant even accurately comprehend it aside from "Its really, really, big" but I would have assumed they could cause havoc much further away than a cosmic nanometer.
Believe it or not a lot of my interest of space came from exploration video games with accurate scale like Elite Dangerous. It kind of cemented in my head how (as douglas adams put it) "Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.".
Happy to see AMAs with scientists and not socialites. Keep doing what you're doing, and thank you for doing it!

What do we currently think the range of GRBs are? I know they travel in two concentrated jets but I also heard we have detected GRBs from thousands of light years away and many we have detected originated outside our own galaxy. How close would a supernova need to be to be a concern?
Thanks again, I find GRBs fascinating.

Retail kills your love for your fellow man. Im convinced hitler had a particularly shitty day ringing up a jew who kept asking to see the manager one day.
