So many companies do that. There's this big outdoor clothing company in Germany called Jack Wolfskin that used to produce really high-quality stuff. It was a bit more expensive, but absolutely worth its money, so a lot of people wore it, so much so that in tourist spots abroad you could easily identify the German tourists because they all wore Jack Wolfskin waterproof jackets, or Jack Wolfskin backpacks, or Jack Wolfskin shoes. But then they sold the company, the new owners outsourced production to China, and now they only produce cheap shit that breaks under any sort of real strain, but still costs as much as it used to.
